Christine Ahern joined TODAYin 2009 as the Melbourne reporter, covering major breaking news and current affairs stories throughout Victoria.

Born in Caloundra, Queensland, Ahern completed a Bachelor of Arts double major in journalism at the University of Queensland in 1997.

Ahern’s media career began at the Weekend Independent newspaper in 1995. The following year she was awarded the MEAA for Most Outstanding Journalism Student in Queensland.

She made the move to television in 1996 when she joined the ABC in Brisbane as a researcher on the Landline rural TV program.

A state swimmer for Queensland during her school years, Ahern always had a keen interest in sport, which led to her taking up the position of sports reporter and weekend presenter with ABC TV in Hobart.

Two years later in 2002, she was offered the role of senior sports reporter and presenter in ABC TV’s Melbourne bureau, before joining Nine News in 2004 as a sports reporter/presenter.

Ahern has covered dozens of major sporting events including the Sydney, Beijing and Athens Olympics, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Outside of work Ahern keeps fit swimming, competing in several ocean swims in Victoria.
