Tank a Day Challenge:

What is being offered?

The TODAY BlueScope Tank-a-Day Challenge will give a rainwater tank to a primary school in Australia every school day for one year. That's 200 rainwater tanks a year.

We all need to work together to help Australia conserve and manage water and TODAY and BlueScope Steel are asking schools to demonstrate their commitment to conserving water by partnering with them in the Tank-a-Day Challenge.

Primary schools that are successful in the challenge will receive:

  • A rainwater tank and pump
  • Delivery of the tank to the primary school site
  • Construction of the tank on a prepared site
  • BSS will work with the school to prepare the necessary downpipe connection to render the tank functional
  • Technical advice and support.

The rainwater tanks BlueScope is offering in the challenge have been purpose-designed for schools and have in-built safety features such as a lockable access hatch and fixings secured away from vandalism and weather.

Who can take part in the Tank a Day Challenge?

All primary schools across Australia will be invited to register for the Tank-a-Day Challenge.

To participate and be eligible to receive one of the 200 rainwater tanks, primary schools must:
1. Register their school (only primary school principals will have the authority to do this) on the dedicated website www.tankaday.com.au.

In the registration process, primary school principals must outline why their school would benefit from a rainwater tank.
2. Demonstrate student involvement in the challenge through participation in an educational water-saving quiz.
3. Have a 6m x 6m site available adjacent to a school building where there is working guttering to accommodate a rainwater tank.
4. Agree to the Tank a Day Challenge terms and conditions.

The benefits to schools from a rainwater tank include:

  • Minimise stormwater run-off into their local eco-system
  • Take pressure off the main's water system
  • Use rainwater for watering flower beds, gardens, vegetable patches, cleaning and a host of other uses
  • Help reduce school water bills.

BlueScope Steel will work with each recipient school to assist in the technical requirements for the installation and will provide appropriate advice and support.

BlueScope Steel has a website to educate young Australians on the water cycle and saving water. While online, students will be asked to complete a water-saving quiz and play interactive games where they can learn about rainwater harvesting and water conservation.

In addition, the website provides information on all aspects of the Tank-a-Day initiative and is 100 percent transparent in stating all the terms and conditions of the initiative.

All students at primary schools that register for the Tank-a-Day Challenge will receive a fun learning pack that will assist them in completing the water-saving quiz. Separate packs will be distributed to the students of schools that receive a tank.
