Ron Douglas turned back on Wall Street to make a living as a food sleuth and discovering the secrets of famous recipes. His latest conquest: KFC and what really makes it finger lickin’ good.
In his quest to uncover the Colonel’s secrets, Ron experimented with different techniques - and even tried to bribe employees (who remained tight-lipped!).
And while Ron admits that he doesn’t exactly know what all the 11 herbs and spices are, he has a recipe that will have just about anybody fooled – The taste is the same, a claim backed by at least one reporter who did a taste test.
Ron shares the ingredients for his version of KFC's 11 herbs and spices recipe:
1 teaspoon ground oregano
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon ground sage
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons paprika
1 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons Accent
Ron believes that the biggest difference between his chicken and KFC is the fact the company uses an industrial deep fryer, which he is now trying to get a hold of. That as well as a product called Accent, a common product in North America, which is similar to MSG in that it acts as a flavour enhancer and is common in many processed food products.
