Hidden additives in meat

Tuesday December 28, 2010

Australians love their meat. We consume an average of 46.5 kg of red meat a year, almost double the servings of meat we should be eating, but do you know what is in the meat that you are buying?

Nutritionist Susie Burrell joined TODAY to give us the facts.

The red meat industry has a national value of $16 billion which is compensated by Australians who consume almost double the amount of meat in a year than they are supposed to. The recommended weekly serve of meat should be 3-4 serves of lean meat which, in most cases, has been injected with Hormone Growth Promotant (HGP). As consumers, we are not aware of this unless we have had the luxury of purchasing the products directly from the supplier.

Hormone injected chicken has been outlawed in Australia for decades as we are unaware of the long term effect of consuming hormone injected produce. Due to this, in the new year some supermarkets have made the conscious decision to stock hormone free beef due to consumer preference.
