The Top Taste Lamingtons Aussie Poll is new national survey celebrating what we love most about being Australian and the survey found that meat Pies, Lamingtons, the Ute and Ian Thorpe have been voted to be some of Australia’s favourite icons.

The Top Taste Lamingtons Aussie Poll surveyed 400 men and women between the ages of 18 and 50 from around Australia.

Main results of the Top Taste Lamingtons Aussie poll:

  • Meat pies were voted as the most Australian food followed by lamingtons.
  • Swimming champion, Ian Thorpe received 33 percent of the votes for Australia’s favourite iconic celebrity followed by our princess of pop, Kylie Minogue.
  • The vote found that Australia’s greatest sporting moment was winning the America's Cup in 1983 followed by the Socceroos' performance in 2006 World Cup.
  • The Ute was voted the best Australian invention followed by the Hills hoist clotehs line.
  • The favourite Australian myth to spread overseas: "we keep koalas and kangaroos as pets".
  • The favourite Australian couple winning vote went to TV stars Bert and Patty Newton followed by Kath Day and Kell Knight (from the ABC television series Kath and Kim)
  • Favourite slang word: "G'day"
  • Favourite Australian phrase "he'll/she'll be right mate"
  • Favourite Australia Day pastime: a barbeque with family
  • Popular song for Australia Day: "Land Down Under"
